Travel Insurance For Backpackers
Backpackers will likely need specific travel insurance tailored to their specific scenario. Travel insurance for backpackers is likely to include:
Do Not Buy Travel Insurance Until You Have Read This!
If you’re buying travel insurance as a backpacker, you should check that it covers all of these things.
If you are traveling with a companion, be sure to check the terms that allow you to add an additional passenger to your policy for free.
If you’re only planning on backpacking for a few months, check out the best long-term travel insurance (below).
World Nomads is a specialist travel insurance provider for backpackers and digital nomads. They provide a policy that is beneficial to anyone traveling continuously for long periods of time without returning to their home country.
Planning Your First Backpacking Trip Abroad For 2023? Here’s The Unmissable Checklist & Guide For Beginners!
This is a good policy for backpackers as it covers things like baggage delays and extra expenses you may incur when buying essentials. It is also specially tailored for backpackers.
There are two downsides to this policy (or at least things for backpackers to consider). First, you will not be covered for damages caused by intoxication. So if you lose your bag on a night out, you may not be covered. Secondly, it is your responsibility to keep your belongings as safe as possible at all times – this means locking them in hostels.
We love the Outbacker because it’s affordable for anyone planning a backpacking working vacation. So if you are traveling to Australia and working on farms, working in a vineyard in South Africa, or working in any business during the ski season, this may be the best option for you.
For UK holidaymakers, the Post Office has a solid travel insurance option. We love their travel insurance as it can cover backpacking trips for up to 18 months. This makes it a great option for anyone traveling on a long trip. The post office also offers student discounts.

We were surprised how many annual multi-trip travel insurance policies prevented us from staying in the small print for long. In particular, many were limited to 30 days of travel abroad. This didn’t always work for us when we travel, so we purchased travel insurance that covers stays between 30 days and 90 days. Here are the best ones we found:
We love this annual multi-trip option because you can purchase insurance to cover international travel for up to 62 days. There is an option to pay for an additional cover for the gadget.
This is also a popular annual option for multiple trips as you can purchase insurance to cover international travel for up to 60 days.
One thing to check with long-term travel insurance is whether the policy requires you to book a return trip. If you plan to keep your long-term trip indefinitely, then any condition that you have a return trip may prevent your insurance claim.
How Travel Insurance Can Save Your Backpacking Vacation
For digital nomads like us, travel insurance can be quite difficult. There are a few things Digital Nomads should look out for when buying travel insurance, such as:
Nomads of the World – link here. Why do we like it? World Nomads insurance covers long-term travel and is specifically designed for the nomadic lifestyle. It also has technology cover of £2,000 and cover for 200 sports.
SafetyWing – link here. Why do we like it? SafetyWing is one of the most famous travel insurance providers for Digital Nomads. The product is different from others in the market because it is Digital Nomad Travel Medical Insurance. This means you can access a variety of medical needs while you travel. Based on the reviews, it seems to be tried and trusted. Another thing we like about SafetyWing is that it offers different rates for digital nomads under 39. You can also pay monthly and cancel at any time. So it’s a bit like annual insurance, but without the upfront cost.
Covid coverage is great! We are very pleased to be out of the extremely restrictive travel period caused by Covid. However, it is still a risk and it is important to look carefully at travel insurance policies for Covid cover. Since the pandemic, many travel insurance companies have tightened policy wording. This has made it quite difficult to track down travel issues caused by Covid.

Covid policies are always changing, so we do not recommend a specific policy, but we do recommend that you consider the points above when deciding on your policy. Always read the fine print!
We have found that most travel insurances have the option to add cover for certain sports. Fortunately, many annual travel insurance policies include coverage for hiking, yoga, sailing, and other low-risk activities that we typically do as part of our travels. However, many insurance policies do not automatically cover higher risk activities such as ocean sailing, hiking and snow sports such as skiing.
If you’re planning on doing sports during your trip, be sure to check the fine print!
Many people make the mistake of purchasing travel insurance right before their trip, even on the day of their trip. This is problematic because travel insurance is only valid from the date of purchase. So if you booked a trip (say in January) and you plan to travel in March and you wait until March to buy travel insurance, you won’t be covered for a trip cancellation that happens in February (say).
Money Saving Hacks For Budget Backpackers
Travel insurance is much more effective if you purchase it at the same time as booking or organizing your trip. If you have annual insurance, you will be covered for all your trips throughout the year. We love annual coverage because we don’t have to think about it when it’s available!
Annual cover is usually cheaper if you travel frequently and otherwise need multi-trip insurance. However, if you’re going on a particularly unusual trip, such as shark diving in Australia, and you tend to take lower-octane vacations the rest of the year, you can buy single trip insurance with specific cover for your sharks. . driving trip.

During adventure travel, I’ve filed travel insurance claims for theft from a hotel room, a broken ankle, delayed travel plans, a broken camera, and that time I knocked out three teeth in a motorcycle accident. When these accidents happened, I was relieved that I was responsible enough to purchase comprehensive but inexpensive travel insurance for travelers.
I’ve had really great experiences with two different types of travel insurance. I’ll explain the difference between these two cheap backpacking travel insurance options that I’ve used over the past six years of travel. I have used the following combination of three options.
