Travel Insurance For Adventure
It should be noted that travel insurance is also very important for regular trips. This means that it is practically a must when traveling where you will be doing adventure activities or sports as they only make the trip more risky. Therefore, travel insurance is more than important.
Best Backpacker Insurance For Travel
If you are just looking for normal travel insurance, I recommend my article with the 3 best and cheapest international travel insurance for 2020.
In other words, if you buy a type of travel insurance that doesn’t cover snowboarding and you get injured while snowboarding, your insurance won’t help you.
Basic travel insurance plans cover basic activities (such as “safe” sports, fishing, hiking, diving, etc.). But if you’re planning to do more extreme sports or adventure activities like surfing, diving, skiing, snowboarding, etc… then there’s a good chance you’ll want to add an add-on to your plan to make sure your specific activities are covered;
These are the types of sports and activities that are often not covered by general types of travel insurance (or at least basic plans). This will vary from insurance company to insurance company.
Should I Get Travel Insurance
For example, skydiving is an activity that will never be covered by a basic travel insurance plan. However, canyoning may be covered by some plans but not others.
When I talk about the top 7 companies below, you’ll see screenshots of activities that are considered adventure activities or sports (so you’ll know what type of plan will cover you).

To choose the right plan for you, you need to consider several factors. From the amount of coverage to the activities and sports included.
Do You Need Travel Insurance For Cruises? Yes! All Our Tips & Recommendations — Freestyle Travelers
First, it’s important to pay attention to the requirements for your destination (for example, in Europe, you must have at least USD 30,000 in coverage in the Schengen area).
And remember that the costs and benefits can be more important than the simple cost of travel insurance. This is because the difference in cost may reflect greater coverage (for more sports/activities) and benefits that make it more valuable than a cheaper plan.
Also, be sure to read insurance policies and pay attention to terms, exclusions, and service instructions. This way, you can avoid unpleasant surprises when an emergency arises and be sure that your sport/activity will be covered.
Sports/adventure travel insurance is much more specific than casual travel insurance and it can be very stressful to spend hours searching the ‘net’ to find the right insurance.
Wanderwell Travel Insurance — The Transformational Travel Council
With that in mind and to help you choose the best adventure and extreme activity insurance, I’ve created a list below comparing the 4 best travel insurances available.
At the end of the post, you’ll find a table comparing the activities and sports covered, as well as each insurance company’s coverage amounts.
ADVICE: As always, I recommend getting a quick quote online for all of the companies I’ve listed below. It will only take you a few minutes and you can save a lot just by doing good research.
World Nomads is a respected and well-known company focused on providing adventure travel and multi-sport. It’s even the insurance recommended by the world’s biggest travel guide, Lonely Planet.
International Citizens Insurance Announces Best Travel Insurance Companies For 2023 Summer Travel
Their cover is guaranteed and is provided with Bupa, AIG and Nationwide insurers depending on which country you are from. Includes emergency support in multiple languages 24/7.
As you can see from the table, the coverage sizes are very different. But the same does not apply to the price you pay. And both plans include over 150 activities.
However, there are a few activities that are only covered by the Explorer plan (make sure you check your specific sport/activity before purchasing).
Because there are so many activities (even with just the standard plan), it’s a great option for adventure travelers who do multiple sports and may need emergency medical care.
Amex Platinum Travel Insurance: What To Know
The price, when you consider everything that it includes, is really worth it. Just to give you an idea, I received a hypothetical quote in two weeks in Switzerland, a destination known worldwide for its skiing.
One of its biggest attractions is the amount of cover, which can be higher than many other insurance providers depending on your country of residence. It usually ranges from $100,000.00 to unlimited!!
And given the high cost of sports accidents if you play sports (which are included in the list above), World Nomads is a safe bet.
By clicking this link here and using the coupon code comfort5, you will receive 5% off your World Nomads travel insurance plan.
World Nomads Travel Insurance — Steep Adventures
SafetyWing is a new travel insurance that is really similar to WorldNomads and focuses on all kinds of sports travelers.
They are partners of HCC (which I mentioned above) and are insured by LLOID. In other words, it is quite a reliable company.
One good thing about them is that they have an accurate list of all the sports and extreme activities they cover on their website.
I will post this list here plus the sports activities they do NOT cover. It is important to emphasize that this is not a final list. And note that this activity is only covered if you do it recreationally. Not covered for organized athletics* or professional sports;

Diving (subject to Aqua Pursuits, which includes an underwater breathing apparatus) as long as you are PADI/NAUI certified, or if not certified, you are covered up to 10 meters, accompanied by a certified instructor.
Skiing (covered for recreational skiing only. Not covered away from designated and marked ski access points (out of blast) and/or contrary to local ski school or local authority advice)
Snowboarding (Covered for recreational snowboarding only. No cover when skiing away from prepared and marked access points (out of blast) and/or against local ski school or local authority advice)
Weightlifting, cardio, and gym classes (note that training for powerlifting competitions is excluded).
Adventure Travel Destinations & Insurance
*You are not covered if the activity is organized athletics that includes regular or scheduled practice and/or games, or if the activity is performed professionally or for any remuneration, reward or profit.
You must ensure that the activity is properly supervised and that appropriate safety equipment (eg hats, life jackets, etc.) is worn at all times.
Skiing off-piste (outside prepared and marked access areas) and/or against or contrary to local ski school or local authority advice
Snowboarding outside the underpasses (outside prepared and marked areas) and/or against or against the advice of the local ski school or local authority
Best Travel Insurance Companies Of 2023
Sub Aqua Pursuits involving underwater breathing apparatus (unless accompanied by a certified instructor or PADI/NAUI certified at depths less than 10m)
They offer several different plans, including insurance options for exchange students and insurance for expats (foreigners living in other countries).
IMG Global’s best international adventure travel insurance is their Patriot Travel Medical Insurance, which you can purchase for short trips of 5 days and up to 12 months.
The coverage limit with this plan can be up to $2 million. But for specific adventure sports accident coverage, the limit is significantly reduced.
Does Travel Insurance Cover Adventure Activities?
Sports coverage is additional. So you should select Adventure Sports Rider when you get the offer.
However, the plan has potential as it covers activities not covered by the World Nomads’ Standard Plan, such as bungee jumping and skydiving (although they are covered by the World Nomads’ Explorer Plan). So IMG can be a good alternative if you plan to do these activities during your trip.
Not to mention that the prices are a bit more attractive. Given the same hypothetical quote, two weeks in Switzerland covering adventure sports gives the following:
So although it doesn’t cover a total number of activities and the coverage is less than World Nomads, it’s worth seeing if your sport/activity is on the list above.
Travel Insurance For Disney Trips & Vacations
You can get a quote directly on their website. They also have multilingual customer service either by phone or live chat on their website.
HCC Medical Insurance is an American insurance company that was acquired in 2015 by Tokio Marine, another well-known insurance company.
One of HCC’s most exciting differentiators is that it offers specialized travel insurance options with coverage ranging from leisure trips to mission trips to exchange students.
Insurance is offered in conjunction with Atlas Travel with a maximum coverage of up to USD 2 million.
Squaremouth Launches Battleface As Its Newest Travel Insurance Provider
The first plan has a maximum coverage of up to USD 1 million (and is therefore cheaper), while the latter has up to USD 2 million.
