The first year (or Generalist Practice Year) is designed to equip you with the foundational knowledge, values and social work skills required for solid social work practice and prepare you for advanced practice in advanced generalist specialties.

Students who choose not to study in an area of focus, which we call the Advanced Generalist Focus, should speak to a supervisor. Through the courses they choose, the students deepen their knowledge, values and competence in social work within this framework with a direct or indirect practice focus.
The length of the postgraduate program will vary depending on the student’s previous preparation and the number of credits completed each semester. Typically, for students without a BSW, completion of the MSW program requires four semesters of full-time study. For students who hold a BSW and meet the criteria, the minimum time to complete the MSW program is two full-time semesters if admitted with full advanced status.

The first year curriculum is generalist and practical orientation. It is designed to provide you with basic knowledge, values and skills in social work and to prepare you for the advanced generalist specialisation.
Within a broad framework of social justice, advanced practice (students continuing from a generalist year), or advanced status (students entering the program with a recent BSW), MSW students pursue a specialization in generalist advanced practice and may choose an area of focus for social matters.

The focus area Child, youth and family welfare is intended for students who are interested in school social work, child welfare or advanced general social work with children, youth and families in other contexts and systems (e.g. juvenile justice, community-based services). Areas of focus expose students to the policies and practice philosophies of different service systems, how these different systems intersect, and models of coordinated service delivery for families involved in the different systems. Students are exposed to innovative prevention and intervention strategies designed to reduce risk and increase resilience in children, youth and families from diverse backgrounds and family structures.

The Mental Health focus area prepares social workers for advanced practice roles in community mental health and substance abuse service organizations, particularly those serving the needs of the most marginalized, oppressed and disadvantaged members of communities. Recovery orientation, consumer influence, and cultural competence are woven into the mental health focus area curriculum.
Although the focus area includes a life-course perspective, the focus area primarily focuses on clinical social work with children, young people and adults who live with or are at risk of experiencing serious mental health problems and substance abuse problems. Students should be familiar with conceptual and theoretical frameworks for understanding the nature, etiology, course and consequences of major mental disorders, and evidence-based and emerging models of clinical social work. Effective social work also requires an understanding of how social policy and funding streams for mental health and substance abuse affect service delivery systems and consumers of services and their families, particularly marginalized, oppressed and underserved members of society.
Students may choose to pursue a more specialized area (subfocus) if they choose a focus area in an advanced generalist orientation. Students interested in the subfocus should read the Specialization Handbook (found in Student Resources) and speak with an advisor. Master Of Social Work (msw) Degree: A Guide
Students enrolled in the full-time MSW program may earn a dual degree or multiple majors while pursuing graduate education at the Sandra Rosenbaum School of Social Work.
A dual degree is a degree between the Sandra Rosenbaum School of Social Work and a professional School of Medicine, Law, Veterinary Medicine or Pharmacy. All other bachelor’s degree combinations fall into the dual degree category. Below you can read more detailed information about both options.
Note: It is the student’s responsibility to understand the curriculum of both degree options and to work individually and collaboratively with advisors from each program to discover how the two programs can work together and maintain the integrity of both programs’ curricula.
Students enrolled in the full-time MSW program can earn a dual degree—an MSW from the Sandra Rosenbaum School of Social Work and an MPH, MD, JD, DVM, or Pharm.D. from one of the following schools:

Tuition fees are determined by the consolidated fee table. The assessed fees are roughly in the middle between degree fees and professional fees. Each semester’s credit limit coincides with the professional school’s higher point maximum.
Students enrolled in the full-time MSW program can earn a dual degree – two master’s degrees from two separate departments.
A student who completes a dual degree receives two degrees – an MSW from the Sandra Rosenbaum School of Social Work and a master’s degree in another field. Graduates receive two diplomas. School of Social Work advisor Sandra Rosenbaum works with students on the requirements to earn their MSW while advisors from other departments advise the same students on meeting those requirements.
Students may register for additional programs at the time of initial registration, add a program at any time during their registration, or re-register and pursue a second degree after completing the first program.
Uog Students Earn Master’s Degrees In Social Work
Dual Degree Approval: At the time of graduation, each program will submit a list of courses used to fulfill requirements for that program to the Graduate School. Both advisors must sign the course checklist as an indication of approval. The graduate school will review course listings for credit overlap between degrees.

Tuition fees for a double degree will be calculated based on the number of credits taken in both programs at postgraduate level. Social work with individuals, families and groups is based on a bio-psychosocial approach to direct service. Social workers serve as practitioners in multiple roles that include the following: social worker, caseworker, leader, supervisor, mediator, advocate, counselor, educator, or resource specialist. His practice method emphasizes the importance of enhancing individual strengths, rather than focusing on deficiencies or pathologies. The goal of IFG exercises is to alleviate stressors associated with human development and functioning. Practitioners’ attention is directed toward increasing the coping skills of individuals, families, and groups in dealing with aspects of their interpersonal environment through the empowerment process. Recognition of diversity issues is fundamental to IFG’s culturally competent practices.
Applicants must first meet general university admissions requirements for graduate students. In addition, applicants must demonstrate an academic and professional commitment to social work and the values and philosophical underpinnings of the school’s mission. To be considered for admission to the MSW program, prospective students must apply to and be admitted to the Graduate Studies and School of Social Work.
