Why did you choose UIC? It’s a great research institution that has an amazing IT department. UIC is also where my parents met, so it has always had a soft spot in my heart.

What is your academic area within your department? I leaned towards data-centric classes like data and text mining, information retrieval, and machine learning.

What Can I Do With A Computer Science Degree?

How does UIC prepare you for your future goals? UIC has provided me with an environment where I can thrive by learning and exploring multiple areas. I am so grateful to have been mentored and inspired by so many amazing professors and colleagues in the UIC department. Thanks to his guidance, I was able to explore career paths from teaching to research and industry. If it wasn’t for their encouragement and support, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

Did you do an internship during UIC? synchronicity From there I got a full-time job at Nike as a data visualization engineer.

Looking broadly at your field of study, who is the person you most admire and why? I’m a huge fan of Dr. Latania Sweeney. Not only has she come a long way as a world-class computer scientist, but her work serves as a constant reminder of the responsibility we all share as digital innovators.

Favorite course so far? I really liked 415 Computer Vision. We did a 3D reconstruction project.

What are your plans after you finish school? I want to stay in AI, maybe data analysis. One option is to stay in the US through an optional internship program, but my Fulbright scholarship requires me to return to Colombia, so that I can work there in a private company or at a university.

What do you suggest newcomers to Chicago see or do if they’ve already seen Navy Pier, the Riverwalk, and the Skideck? I love the lake shore, especially in the summer. Ride a bike, go to parks, visit museums. I really like that Chicago has different neighborhoods. If you go from one end to the other, you will see that they are completely different.

Your main hobby/outside interest: I like to play the guitar and sing. I am currently practicing rock music in Spanish from Argentina and Mexico.

Best trip/vacation you’ve ever taken and why: When I first came to the United States, the Fulbright program organized an event: a week-long getaway to Rochester, New York. I made friends with Fulbrighters from all over the world and went to Niagara Falls. It was a fantastic experience. It’s a great time to earn a master’s degree in computer science! Not only is the median salary for an employee with a master’s degree $101,000, much higher than those with just a bachelor’s degree, but the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment in IT jobs will grow 15% through 2029. That’s much faster than the industry average! I guess Forbes was right when they declared the master’s degree the new industry standard!

But it’s not easy to determine which colleges and universities are the best when it comes to where to study for a master’s degree in computer science. There are many factors to consider, including overall cost, national reputation, and resume, to name just a few considerations. That’s why the Center for Computer Science Degrees took on the task of determining the 50 best master’s programs in computer science, updated for 2021.

To come up with our ranking of the best master’s degrees in computer science, we started by listing more than 75 programs in the United States. We considered only those universities that offer a variety of master’s degrees in computer science, as opposed to a track or concentration. To narrow our list down to the top 50, we used the following scoring system.
