Film Scholarships – The EFA Abedin Keid Saleh Film School, located in the Boujdour refugee camp near Tindouf, was set up in 2011 to train young Sahrawi refugees in the use of film as a storytelling tool. The school trains the first generation of Sahrawi filmmakers, giving rise to Sahrawi cinematography, a new art form in the Western Desert.

One of the goals of EFA Abdin Kaid Salah is to send film graduates abroad to enhance their filmmaking and teaching skills so that they can return as educators (and filmmakers) to promote and support the project. Six alumni of the school have benefited from these film scholarships to date.

Paywall: The Business Of Scholarship

Currently, both the Madrid Film Institute and Chaminade Student Residence offer the possibility of renewal of scholarships.

The training of desert teachers forced the school to change its paradigm to become an entirely desert enterprise. With full time assistant teachers on site the school now offers students a program through to the end of the academic year. Sahrawi teachers are able to adapt the curriculum to local capabilities, needs, and realities. Sahrawi educators broadcast training on film and storytelling in the unique cultural contexts of the Sahrawi people. The presence of Sahrawi teachers provides positive role models for the students. The school also attracts students with its Solar Cinema Western Sahara, a school-run project (also a project) that visits camps that put on solar-powered shows. Participants indicated that the audience was inspired by the vision of an entirely desert project with desert films, filmmakers, exhibitors and curators.

The primary challenge is to find a sponsor (professor or college station producer) to be the university’s scholarship guy, and join him in selecting a student who shows promise and enthusiasm for airing film criticism.
